Signlanguageiscurrentlyoneofthemostpopularfamiliesoflanguagesintheworld,withNationalGeographicestimatingmorethan300formsofsignlanguageusedbymorethan70millionpeopleworldwide.
Yetmostpeople,andevenmostusersofsignlanguage,maybeunawareofthenotablerolethatCatholicsplayedintheearliestyearsofmodernsignlanguage,includingthefoundingoftheworld’sfirstfreeschoolfordeafpeople.
Thatschool,theNationalInstituteforDeafYouthofParis,wasfoundedin1760byFatherCharles-Micheldel’Épée.Theinstitutesaysonitswebsitethatthepriestwasinspiredtodevelopasystemofsignlanguageaftermeetingtwodeaftwins.HewouldgoontolaunchasmallschoolontheruedesMoulinsinParisthatwouldintimebecomethenationalinstitution.
