Therateofmarriedcouplesfilingfordivorcehasbeguntotrenddownwardinrecentyears,buttherateof“graydivorce”—divorcesofcouplesintheir60sorolder—hascontinuedtoclimb.
AJuly2025reportfromtheInstituteforFamilyStudiesfoundthatabout40%oftoday’sfirstmarriageswillendindivorce—muchlessthantheoft-citedestimatesofabout50%.Thisispartlybecausemarriagesaremoreselectiveandsomeyoungerpeoplearewaitinglongertomarryorshunningmarriagealtogether.
Inspiteofthatoveralldownwardtrend,thereportexplainsthatthe40%estimateisbasedontheassumptionthatdivorcerateswillremainstable.Itacknowledgesthoughthat“predictionisnoeasytask,”andiflater-yeardivorceratescontinuetosurge,thenumberofdivorcesmaybehigher.
