“Listentoatale,whichisnotameretale,”begins Eusebius inhis4thbook ChurchHistory, “butanarrativeconcerningJohntheapostle,whichhasbeenhandeddownandtreasuredupinmemory.”(III.23.6)
It’sthelatefirstcentury,andJohntheApostlehasjustreturnedfromexileontheislandofPatmos(wherehereceived Revelation),andhe’stravelingaroundappointingbishops.
Inonecity,hegivesthenewbishopsaspecialchargetolookafterthespiritualhealthofaparticularyoungman:
“ThisoneIcommittoyouinallearnestnessinthepresenceoftheChurchandwithChristaswitness.”
Thebishoptaughttheyoungmanthefaithandbaptizedhim.But,unfortunately,soonafter,theyoungmanfellinwiththewrongcrowd.Hefirstindulgedwiththeminworldlypleasures,andthenfellintorobberyandothercrimes.
