Bishops in Puerto Rico warn of ‘possible escalations’ in a US-Venezuela war

ThePuertoRicanBishops’ConferencehasexpresseditsoppositiontothemilitarizationbeingcarriedoutbytheUnitedStatesontheisland,anunincorporatedU.S.territory,andintheCaribbeanSearegionandwarnedofthe“possibleescalations”ofawarwithVenezuela. ThePuertoRicanbishopsnotedvariouscallsforpeacefrompopesLeoXIV,Francis,andSt.JohnXXIII,anddenouncedthe“adverseeffects”ofmilitarization,suchas“therestrictionofairspaceandmaritimeroutesandmilitarymaneuversindifferenttownsinPuertoRico,withtheircollateralconsequencesonfishingactivity.” Inrecentweeks,theTrumpadministrationhassentsome15,000troopstotheCaribbeanSearegion,5,000ofwhomareinPuertoRico.AccordingtoCNN,adozenshipshavealsoarrivedinthearea,andU.S.forceshavesunkseveralvesselsallegedlyloadedwithdrugs,causingthedeathsofmorethan80people.
