OnNov.17,theCatholicChurchcelebratesthelifeandexampleofSt.ElizabethofHungary,amedievalnoblewomanwhorespondedtopersonaltragedybyembracingSt.Francis’idealsofpovertyandservice.ApatronofsecularFranciscans,sheisespeciallybelovedtoGermansaswellasthefaithfulofhernativeHungary. AsthedaughteroftheHungarianKingAndrewII,Elizabethhadtheresponsibilitiesofroyaltythrustuponheralmostassoonashershortlifebeganin1207.Whileshewasstillveryyoung,herfatherarrangedforhertobemarriedtoaGermannobleman,LudwigofThuringia. TheplanforcedElizabethtoseparatefromherparentswhilestillachild.AddingtothissorrowwasthemurderofElizabeth’smother,Gertrude,in1213,whichhistoryascribestoaconflictbetweenherownGermanpeopleandtheHungariannobles.Elizabethtookasolemnviewoflifeanddeathfromthatpointonandfoundconsolationinprayer.Bothtendenciesdrewsomeirefromherroyalpeers.
