Thefirebrokeoutaround7:30p.m.onOct.11asthenuns—partoftheAmbrosianhermitagesoftheOrderofSt.AmbroseadNemus—werewatchingalivetelevisionstreamofPopeLeoXIV’sprayervigilforpeaceinSt.Peter’sSquare.Thewomenallescapedwithoutharm,butthemonastery,whichwasbuiltin1628,wasnearlydestroyed.Ninefirefightingteamsintervenedtoputouttheblaze.
TheArchdioceseofMilanreportedthatthefiredestroyeddocuments,religiousartifacts,andthenuns’personalbelongings,thoughthereligioussistersmanagedtosavesome paintingsandarelicofSt.CarloAcutis,whoreceivedhisfirstholyCommunionatthemonasteryonJune16,1998.
ArchbishopMarioDelpiniofMilanexpressedhisclosenessandprayersfollowingthedisaster:“IknowthatthenunswillcontinuetoprayandthattrustinGodwillbethemostnecessaryencouragement.”
