Afirethisweekendseverelydamagedthe17th-centuryBernagaMonasteryoutsideofMilaninnorthernItaly,forcing21cloisterednunstofleetheblaze. Thefirebrokeoutaround7:30p.m.onOct.11asthenuns—partoftheAmbrosianhermitagesoftheOrderofSt.AmbroseadNemus—werewatchingalivetelevisionstreamofPopeLeoXIV’sprayervigilforpeaceinSt.Peter’sSquare.Thewomenallescapedwithoutharm,butthemonastery,whichwasbuiltin1628,wasnearlydestroyed.Ninefirefightingteamsintervenedtoputouttheblaze.
