ThreenursingstudentsfromaCatholicliberalartsschoolinNorthCarolinaspenttwoweeksonahospitalshipinMadagascarthissummer. EmmaHarris,whowillgraduatefromBelmontAbbeyCollegeinCharlotteinMay2026,joinedfellowstudentsCarolineGutierrezandEricDikeonaservice-orientedinternshipinMadagascarwithaninternationalfaith-basedgroupcalledMercyShips.AfterreturningtotheU.S.,Harrissaidshewas“transformed.” MercyShipsoperatesthetwolargestnongovernmentalhospitalshipsworldwide,deliveringfreesurgeriesandhealthcareservices“tothosewithlittleaccesstosafemedicalcare,”accordingtotheorganization.ThethreeBelmontstudents,alongwithtwootherstudents,wereselectedtomakeupthefirst-evercohortofTheMercyship,thehospitalship’ssummerinternshipprogram.
