Crippling priest shortage leads to restructuring of Grand Rapids Diocese

TheDioceseofGrandRapids,Michigan,hasannouncedarestructuringprocessasitfacesashortageofpriests.   Theannouncementofthe“RootedinChristPastoralPlanningProcess”comesayearafterBishopJohnWalkowiakissuedanurgentdiocesan-wideappealtoprayforanincreaseinvocationsinthediocese,whichhashadjustoneordinationtothepriesthoodinthelasttwoyears.  “In2024,wehadonepriestlyordination.In2025,sevenpastorswereeithergrantedseniorprieststatusorreassignedoutsidetheDioceseofGrandRapids,andtherewerenopriestlyordinations,”thediocesesaidinaJune29statement.“Giventhisreality,thePresbyteralCouncilandpriestsofthedioceseurgedBishopWalkowiaktotakeahardlookatwhatisrequiredforthewell-beingofourparishcommunitiesandpriests.” Thepriestshortagehasforcedmanyprieststotakeontheresponsibilityofshepherdingtwotothreeparish
