ArchbishopEdwardWeisenburgerofDetroitannouncedWednesdaythatparishchurchesinthearchdiocesethatoffertheTraditionalLatinMass(TLM)willbeunabletodosoafterJuly1,citingtheVatican’s2023clarificationthatdiocesanbishopsdonotpossesstheauthoritytoallowtheTLMtobecelebratedinanexistingparishchurch. AprominentDetroitshrinewillstillbeabletooffertheTLM,however,andWeisenburgersaidheintendstoidentifyatleastfournon-parishlocationsinthearchdiocesewheretheTLMcanbecelebrated. InanApril16announcement,thearchdiocesesaidWeisenburger,whowasappointedinFebruaryandnewlyinstalledasarchbishoplastmonth,recentlytoldhisprieststhatheisunabletorenewthepriorpermissionsgiventoparishchurchestocelebratetheTraditionalLatinMass,andthusthosepermissionswillexpireonJuly1.
