Canonizedin1253,St.StanislausisabelovedpatronofthePolishnationandpeople.InhisowncountryheiscommemoratedonMay8,thedateofhisdeathin1079.
PopeJohnPaulII—whowasKrakow’sarchbishopinthe“SeeofSt.Stanislaus”beforebecomingpope—paidtributetohimoftenduringhispontificate.Ina2003lettertothePolishChurch,herecalledhowSt.Stanislaus“proclaimedfaithinGodtoourancestorsandstartedinthem…thesavingpowerofthepassionandresurrectionofJesusChrist.”
“Hetaughtthemoralorderinthefamilybasedonsacramentalmarriage.Hetaughtthemoralorderwithinthestate,remindingeventhekingthatinhisactionsheshouldkeepinmindtheunchanginglawofGod,”JohnPaulIIwrote.ThroughSt.Stanislaus,GodtaughtthePolishpope’shomelandtorespect“thelawofGodandthejustrightsofeveryperson.”
